THERAPY OUTCOMES AND RISKS
Therapy outcomes are not guaranteed. While many clients experience benefits from therapy such as improved coping skills, better relationships, reduced symptoms of anxiety or depression, and enhanced self-awareness, results vary significantly from person to person. There is no guarantee that therapy will yield positive or intended results. Therapy also involves potential risks, including but not limited to: experiencing uncomfortable feelings such as sadness, anger, anxiety, or frustration; recalling unpleasant memories or experiences; strain on personal relationships as you make changes; temporary worsening of symptoms before improvement occurs; and the possibility that therapy may not be effective for you. Your commitment to the therapeutic process, the strength of the therapeutic relationship, and various external factors all influence outcomes. You have the right to discontinue therapy at any time, and I encourage open communication about your experience, concerns, and progress throughout our work together.
CONFIDENTIALITY AND ITS LIMITS
Confidentiality is a fundamental part of the therapeutic relationship, and I am committed to protecting your privacy in accordance with applicable laws and ethical guidelines. However, there are important legal and ethical limitations to confidentiality that you should understand. I am required by law to break confidentiality in the following circumstances: when there is reasonable suspicion of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a child, elderly person, or dependent adult; when you present an imminent risk of serious harm to yourself or others; when a court order or subpoena legally requires the disclosure of information; and as otherwise required by state or federal law. Additionally, confidentiality may be limited when working with couples or families, as information shared in joint sessions is not considered confidential from other participants in those sessions. If I consult with other professionals about your care for clinical supervision or collaboration purposes, I will do so without revealing identifying information whenever possible. Your complete rights regarding confidentiality, including your rights under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), will be discussed in detail during our initial session and outlined in the informed consent documents you will sign before beginning therapy.
HIPAA NOTICE OF PRIVACY PRACTICES
As a covered healthcare provider under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), I am required to maintain the privacy and security of your protected health information (PHI). You have important rights under HIPAA regarding your health information, including the right to: access and obtain copies of your records; request amendments to your records; receive an accounting of certain disclosures of your information; request restrictions on certain uses and disclosures; request confidential communications by alternative means; and file a complaint if you believe your privacy rights have been violated. My full Notice of Privacy Practices, which provides detailed information about how your health information may be used and disclosed, your rights under HIPAA, and my obligations regarding your privacy, will be provided to you at our first session and you will be asked to acknowledge receipt of this notice. You may request a copy of the current Notice of Privacy Practices at any time by contacting me directly.
